샌프란시스코 (San Francisco) 페닌슐라의 북서쪽 해안 링컨 공원 (Lincoln Park) 내 낭떠러지 위에 자리잡은 클리프 하우스 (Cliff House)는 2개의 레스토랑이 들어서 있는 건물이다. 2개의 레스토랑 가운데 하나는 격식을 차리지 않는 비스트로 이며 다른 하나는 좀 더 격식이 있는 레스토랑으로 수트로 (Sutro)라는 이름을 갖고 있다.
일요일은 브런치를 서빙하며, 빌딩에는 선물 가게도 있다. 또 발코니 라운지에서는 라이브 재즈 연주가 주기적으로 열리며 일요일에는 라이브 하프 연주도 있다. 클리프 하우스에서 내려다 보이는 바다에는 과거 물개 들이 많이 서식해 실록 (Seal Rock)이라고 이름 붙여진 거대한 암석이 있다. 바위라고 하기에는 크고, 섬이라고 하기에는 작은 규모이다.
유서 깊은 역사를 자랑하는 클리프 하우스는 사람으로 치면 팔자가 아주 사나운 편에 속한다고 해야 할 것 같다. 두 번이나 화재를 당해 파괴되고 오늘날 남아있는 것은 세 번째 지어진 건물이기 때문이다.
첫 번째 클리프 하우스는 1863년 지어진 단아한 건물이었다. 지어진 지 5년 뒤에 증축됐던 이 건물은 3명의 미국 대통령과 허스트, 스탠퍼드 등 내놓으라 하는 재벌들이 묵고 간, 당시로써는 미국에서 가장 이름난 휴양소 가운데 하나였다. 이 건물은 자수성가한 기업가, 아돌프 수트로 (Adolph Sutro)가 1881년 매입해 본격적으로 사업에 활용하기 시작했다. 수트로는 방문객들을 다수 유치하기 위해 이 곳까지 들어오는 철도를 개설하는 등 심혈을 기울였으나 1894년 크리스마스 때 화재로 그만 건물이 다 타버리는 실패를 감수해야 했다.
두 번째 클리프 하우스는 수트로가 프랑스의 성을 모방해 웅대하게 지은 것으로 1896년 문을 열었다. 건물은 8층 높이 규모였으며 태평양 해수면에서는 200피트 가량 솟아 있었다. 전망대와 함께 다양한 레스토랑, 마사지실, 바, 주방 등과 함께 아트 갤러리, 보석 전시실, 사진 전시실 등이 갖춰져 있는 초호화판 휴양시설이었다. 1906년 샌프란시스코의 대지진에도 살아남은 이 건물은, 그러나 이듬해 또 다시 화마에 의해 파괴되는 운명을 맞는다.
세 번째 클리프 하우스는 수트로의 딸인 에마 (Dr. Emma Merritt)가 지은 것으로 1909년 문을 열었다. 신고전파 양식으로 지어진 이 건물은 그러나 대공황과 1차 세계 대전 와중에서 제대로 영업을 하지 못하고 다른 사람에게 팔리고 말았다. 이후 주인이 바뀌고 수 차례의 리모델링은 거친 이 건물은 1977년 연방 국립공원관리국에 넘겨져 오늘에 이르고 있다.
클리프 하우스 바로 옆에는 19세기 말 들어섰던 기상천외한 아이디어의 대형 수영장 건물의 유적이 있다. 클리프 하우스의 소유주였던 아돌프 수트로 (Adolph Sutro)가 1896년 지은 것으로 한꺼번에 최대 1만 명의 손님을 수용할 수 있는 거대한 수영장을 태평양과 맞붙다시피 건설한 점이 눈길을 끈다.
평소 2만장의 수영복과 4만장의 수건을 비치해 놓고 있었던 이 초대형 수영장은 그러나 상업적으로 성공하지 못했다. 하지만 초대형 복합 수영장 건물로 동시에 1000명을 수용할 수 있는 식당과 야외 공연장 등을 갖추고 있었다는 사실은 수트로의 앞서가는 상인 감각을 읽을 수 있는 대목이다.
수영장 주변에는 멕시코, 아시아, 중동 지방 등에서 수집한 각종 조각상과 공예품들로 꾸민 갤러리도 있었다. 이 복합수영장의 일부는 수트로의 손자에 의해 스케이트 링크로 개조됐으나 그 또한 성공을 거두지 못했다. 이후 1950년대 다른 사람의 손에 넘어간 뒤 아파트 단지로 개조가 시도됐으나 그 역시 1966년 발생한 화재로 인해 좌절되고 말았다.
태평양의 물을 머금은 채 덩그러니 파괴된 벽체들만 일부 남아있는 대형 수영장의 잔해는 아이러니하게도 불을 이기지 못한 물의 운명을 대변하는 느낌을 준다.
