 샌프란시스코 베이 유역
미국에서 14번째로 큰 도시이며 캘리포니아에서 4번째로 큰 도시이자 미국 대도시중에 두번째로 과밀한 도시인 샌프란시스코는 산과 물로 둘러싸여진 멋진 경치의 7개의 언덕 사이에 자리잡고 있으며 미국에서 가장 인상적인 다리로 꼽히는 두개의 다리가 도시를 가로지르고 있습니다. 1776년에 스페인이 이곳에 처음으로 정착했으며 1848년의 캘리포니아 골드러쉬로 인해 크게 성장하였는데 1906년 샌프란시스코 대지진으로 인해 도시가 크게 파괴되었으나 빠르게 재건되어 지금과 같이 번성하였습니다.
가파른 도로, 케이블카, 1937년 완공된 단일 경간으로는 세계에서 가장 길고 아름다운 다리이자 샌프란시스코의 상징인 안개속 매달린 골든게이트 브리지 (금문교, Golden Gate Bridge), 알카트라즈 (Alcatraz) 감옥 등 샌프란시스코의 매력을 하나만 꼽는 것은 어려운 일일 정도로 매력적인 도시입니다. 미국에서 가장 다양하고 밀집된 고급레스토랑과 쇼핑센터들 또한 빼놓을수 없으며 샌프란시스코에 거주하는 다양한 인종의 사람들 또한 이목을 끕니다. 아시아 밖에서 가장 큰 아시아 공동체인 차이나타운과 러시아 이민의 거주지인 러시안 힐 (Russian Hill), 그리고 카바레, 재즈 클럽, 카푸치노 하우스, 자유로운 분위기의 나이트클럽들과 레스토랑의 밀집지역인 유명한 환락가 이탈리안 노스 비치 (Italian North Beach)가 바로 그런 곳입니다.
샌프란시스코 국제공항과 오클랜드 국제공항에서 20마일 떨어진 곳에 해안을 따라 길게 형성되어 있는 있는 피셔맨스 워프 (Fisherman's Wharf)는 해산물 레스토랑, 노천 상점들, 상점, 쇼핑센터가 가득 들어서 있어 배로 갓 잡은 해산물을 맛볼수 있는 샌프란시스코 방문에 빼놓을수 없는 명소입니다.
이른 아침 떠오르는 태양을 바라보고, 신선한 새벽 공기와 함께 산책을 즐길수 있는 피셔맨스 워프 지역에서 39번 부두 (Pier 39), 알카트래즈 (Alcatraz), 기라델리 스퀘어 (Ghirardelli Square), 수상공원, 캐너리 (Cannery) 등이 관광객들이 방문하는 곳입니다. 이 지역에서 가장 유명한 곳은 위락시설과 백여개가 넘는 쇼핑상점, 레스토랑들 들어서 있는 39번 부두 (Pier 39)로 연간 천만명이 넘는 관광객이 방문하고 있습니다. 이곳은 또한 선창가 위에 떼를 지어 올라와 있는 바다사자들로도 유명합니다.
1906년 대화재 이전의 샌프란시스코의 모습을 보여주는 몇 개 남지 않은 건물 중 하나인 기라델리 스퀘어 (Ghirardelli Square)는 원래 지역 주민들에게 인기 있는 초콜릿 공장이었던 것을 1960년대에 대대적인 개조를 거처 부티끄와 레스토랑가로 변화하였습니다.
그런 다음 인공공원으로는 세계 최대규모로 2마일에 걸쳐 길게 펼쳐져 있으며 태평양을 접한 부분에서 끝나는 1000 에이커 (405 헥타르)의 광대한 골든게이트 파크 (Golden Gate Park)를 찾으면 많은 미술품이 전시되고 있는 드 영 미술관 (M.H. De Young Memorial Museum), 캘리포니아 과학 아카데미 (California Academy of Science), 식물원 (Conservatory of Flower), 저팬니스 티 가든 등의 관광명소도 함께 자리하고 있습니다.
이 도시의 장관을 보려면 앨카트래즈 (Alcatraz) 섬이나 엔젤 (Angel) 섬으로 가는 베이 크루즈를 이용합니다. 샌프란시스코 베이 가운데 떠있는 악명높은 감옥 알카트래즈 (Alcatraz) 가 자리잡고 있는 알카트래즈 (Alcatraz) 섬은 영화 더 록으로 유명한 곳으로 알카포네 (Capone, Alphonso), 기관총 켈리 (Machine-Gun Kelly), 알카트래즈의 버드맨 (Birdman of Alcatraz)으로 유명한 로버트 스트라우 (Robert Stroud) 등 미국에서 유명한 범죄자들이 한번씩 머물렀던 곳이기도 하고 감옥 말고도 이곳은 샌프란시스코와 금문교를 전망하기에 가장 좋은 장소 중의 하나입니다.
무한하다 할 정도로 다양한 활동과 숙박시설을 제공하는 샌프란시스코는 세계수준의 최고급 호텔과 친절하고 자그만 로지 (Lodging), 숙소와 아침식사를 제공하는 아담한 인 (Inn) 등이 사이좋게 공존하는데 식사와 쇼핑을 할수 있는 곳으로는 유니언 스퀘어 (Union Squre), 샌프란시스코 센터, 유니언 스트리트 (Union Street), 기라델리 스퀘어 (Ghirardelli Square), 캐너리 (Cannery)를 들수 있습니다. 캘리포니아 팰리스 오브 리전 오브 오너 (California Palace of Legion of Honor)와 드 영 미술관 (M.H. de Young Memorial Mususeum)에서 샌프란시스코 현대미술관 (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)에 이르기까지 세계적인 수준의 박물관도 이 지역에 있습니다.
이스트베이 (East Bay)의 베이 브리지 (Bay Bridge)를 가로 질러 가면 오클랜드 (Oakland)에 이르는데 이곳에는 오클랜드의 유일한 메리트 호수 (Lake Merritt), 잭 런던 스퀘어(Jack London Square), 오클랜드 박물관, 버클리 쇼핑지구, 유명한 레스토랑과 캘리포니아 대학이 있습니다. 북쪽으로 좀 가면 발레호 (Vallejo) 지역에 최근 확장된 대양-테마 파크인 식스 플래스머린 월드 (Six Flags Marine World)가 있는데 샌프란시스코에서 페리호로 한시간이 채 안걸립니다.
샌프란시스코 북쪽에 자리하며 미국 최고의 와인생산지인 나파밸리는 아름다운 풍경과 수많은 레스토랑들, 리조트, 스파 등으로도 유명한데 29번 도로와 실버라도 길을 두 축으로 수많은 와이너리들이 몰려있고 곳곳에 수많은 레스토랑과 샵들이 자리잡고 있어 방문객들이 쉽게 투어를 할 수 있습니다. 이곳의 기후와 토양은 포도가 잘 자랄 수 밖에 없을 정도로 포도를 재배하기에 완벽해 1800년대 중반부터 포도농장들이 자리잡기 시작했습니다.
사우스 베이 (South Bay) 지역에는 세계적으로 유명한 "첨단 기술의 수도"인 실리콘밸리가 있고, 신흥도시 산호제 (San Jose)에는 최첨단 기술을 이용해 지은 신기술 박물관 (The Tech Museum of Innovation), 흥미를 자아내는 빅토리아풍의 윈체스터 미스테리 하우스 (Victorian-era Winchester Mystery House), 최근 지은 멕시코 문화유산관 (Mexican Cultural Heritage Gardens and Plaza), 캘리포니아 북부에서 가장 큰 놀이 공원인, 산타클라라의 파라마운트 그레이트 아메리카 (Paramount's Great America) 등이 있습니다.
우거진 숲의 산타 크루즈 산은 샌프란시스코 베이 유역과 센트럴 코스트 지역의 경계가 되는데 로딩 캠프 (Roaring Camp)와 빅트리 협궤 열차 (Big Trees Naroow Gauge Railroad)를 이용하면 증기 기관차를 타고 거대한 삼림을 가로 질러 갈수 있습니다. 몬터레이 베이 (Monterey Bay)로 내려가면 산타크루즈의 모래 해안과 판자로 깐 일세기도 더된 오래된 해안길이 나타나는데 이길은 미국에서 열번째 안에 드는 롤러코스터를 탈수 있는 놀이 공원으로 이어집니다.
골든게이트 브리지 북쪽으로 페리나 차를 타고 건너가면 멋진 해안가 장인 마을인 소살리토 (Sausalito)와 티뷰론 (Tiburon)이 나오고 머린 카운티 (Marin County)에 위치한 뮤어 우즈 국립공원 (Muir Woods National Monument)에 들어가면 높이 솟은, 천년이 넘은 삼나무 숲을 거닐 수 있습니다. 그리고 포인트 리위스 국립해안 공원 (Point Reyes National Seashore) 의 한적한 해안 역시 산책하기 좋은 곳입니다.
