 센트럴 밸리
캘리포니아주 중앙부에 북서에서 남동방향으로 길게 뻗은 분지로 그레이트 밸리 (Great Valley)라고도 불리는 센트럴 밸리의 동쪽은 시에라네바다 (Sierra Nevada)산맥, 서쪽은 코스트 (Coast) 산맥으로 경계를 이룹니다. 캘리포니아뿐 아니라 미국에서도 손꼽히는 농업의 요충지로 알려진 센트럴 밸리는 해안 구릉지대와 시에라 네바다 산맥의 서부 경사면가에 자리잡고 있습니다. 이 지역의 주요 교통도로는 99번 고속도로와 5번 주간 도로가 있는데 5번 주간 도로의 경우, 유서깊은 농업 사회와 시골의 생산 지역을 이어주고 있으며 이 길을 따라 다양한 볼거리가 산재해 있습니다.
캘리포니아는 미국 와인 생산의 90%를 차지하는데 이중 80% 정도가 센트럴 밸리에서 생산되며 년중 내내 열리는 품평회, 페스티발, 로데오같은 행사를 통해 이곳의 다양한 인종과 풍부한 농작물을 볼 수 있습니다. 주요 생산품으로는 과일, 포도, 견과류, 야채, 목화, 낙농제품, 및 가축등이 있으며 많은 공장과 포도 농장이 관광객에게 공개 되면서 직접 제품을 판매하기도 합니다.
이 지역의 주요 인구 집중지역으로는 캘리포니아 중앙분지 남부의 최대 경제·상업 중심지인 프레스노 (Fresno)가 있습니다. 1872년 남부태평양철도 개통에 따라 창설되어, 1885년에 시가 되었으며 1880년대 관계시설의 정비로 집약적 농업을 영위, 면화·곡물·과일·사탕무 등의 농산물 집산지를 이룹니다. 특히 비옥한 토양에서 생산되는 포도를 가공한 건포도 생산량은 세계 최대이고 포도주도 유명하며 요세미티 (Yosemite National Park)와 세쿼이아국립공원 (Sequoia National Park) 등 문화·레크리에이션 시설이 많아 관광의 중심지이기도 합니다. 여기에는 로딩 파크 동물원 (Roeding Park Zoo) 또한 유명합니다.
캘리포니아주 중부 상공업도시로 1848년 골드러시를 계기로 물자공급기지로서 발전해 온 항구도시인 스탁튼 (Stockton)은 조아퀸 (San Joaquin)/새크라멘토 (Sacramento)에 이르는 1000마일 (1610킬로미터)의 보트 낚시 항로가 시작되는 관문이며 그밖에 요세미티 국립공원의 주요 길목인 모데스토 (Modesto)가 있습니다.
세계적인 포도주용 포도생산지인 로디 (Lodi)의 많은 포도 농원에서는 포도주 시식이 가능하고 이 계곡의 남부 끝에 자리잡은 베이커즈필드 (Bakersfield)는 주요 오일 생산지역이자 농업 지대로 19세기 말 석유의 발견에 이어 관개농업의 진전으로 급속히 성장하였고 미국에서 가장 많은 수의 바스크인 (Basque)들이 주민으로 살고 있습니다.
